Hannah Lister (b.1990, Lancashire), is a London based artist who works with photography.
A recent graduate of the Royal Academy Schools, Lister’s photographic world is one in which people, objects and landscapes are captured with a directness that summons quizzical glances, symbols and repeated forms. Ancient sites, sleeping figures and family lineages converse with the barriers of time through metaphor and material as we remember photography’s unique existence as a moment pulled from time’s continuum. Often, slippages within the analogue process place subtle emphasis on the photographs’ materiality and this sits in dialogue with the representational function of the prints; light leaks fall at just the right moment, flashes reflect in windows turning domestic snapshots into poems of birth and death and unremoved specks of dust float in front of cloudy skies. Through this ongoing archive of photographs, we observe the play of everyday life from a distance, while reflecting upon the poetics of the medium itself.
